Theory of Action

Braven supports untapped students from college to career by partnering with universities, employers, and college success organizations to offer a two-part experience that begins with a credit-bearing college course followed by a post-course experience that lasts through graduation. Fellows emerge from Braven with the skills, experiences and networks they need to land a strong first job and get on a path to economic freedom. Braven has worked with more than 2,300 students at four campuses at Rutgers University-Newark, San José State, Lehman College, and National Louis University to date.


Outcomes

Braven Fellows across the country are persisting in college and achieving exciting levels of internship and job attainment. 

  • 95% of our Fellows are persisting in or have graduated from college. 
  • 73% of Braven college graduates have at least one internship during college, compared with 49% of first-generation seniors at large state universities, and Braven Fellows outpace the national average for strong job attainment. 
  • Within six months of graduation, 71% of Fellows secured quality full-time jobs worthy of their Bachelor’s degree or enrolled in graduate school, compared to 56% of all students and 49% of students from similar backgrounds.

The Role:

The Site Director is the inspiring leader who sets a powerful vision for programmatic success and is responsible for ensuring that Braven Fellows graduate from college and secure a strong job within 6 months of graduation. You will lead a team of two full-time employees (Program Managers of the Accelerator Course and Workforce Development) and a team of part-time student interns. You will be responsible for recruiting and selecting our professional volunteers for our programs, and builds and maintains the positive presence of Braven at San José State and in the Silicon Valley community. 


In this role, you will be joining a mission-driven, hard working, and fun loving team. To be successful as part of the SJSU site team you must be comfortable at skillfully navigating ambiguity and ongoing change and demonstrate an openness to feedback. You genuinely understand and appreciate that you are only as good and successful as your team - which includes the community of university partners at SJSU specifically. You must also value leading with a high-impact/low-ego mindset and demonstrate a strong commitment, in both thought and action, to diversity and inclusion. 


Reporting directly to the Executive Director of Braven Bay Area, the Site Director will be responsible for:

  • Setting a vision for the SJSU site and team and building a strategic plan to support that vision
  • Leading the implementation of Braven’s UNVS 101 Career and Leadership Accelerator Course and post-course programming to reach Braven’s annual outcomes
  • Collaborating with the associate deans and faculty at San Jose State
  • Recruiting, hiring, and training Teacher Assistants for the UNVS 101 Course and post-course experience, to meet programmatic goals
  • Successfully recruiting volunteers (known as Leadership Coaches and Coaching Partners) and coaching them on their facilitation of weekly virtual Learning Labs to ensure strong weekly engagement 


The strongest candidates for this role have prior management experience ideally in the education or nonprofit sector along with a clear understanding of the experiences of first-generation, Pell-eligible college students and the transition from college to career. They demonstrate an ability to build strong relationships and shared-value partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders and have mastered the ability to fully leverage data and metrics to drive decision-making. They are energized by public speaking and facilitation, thrive on human interaction, and enjoy the challenge of meeting new people.


The individual in this role will ultimately: 


Set Vision and Direction

  • Set goals and key performance indicators for the SJSU site aligned with Braven’s local and national priorities while also building a collaborative team culture committed to excellence.
  • Manage and develop a high-performing team of two full-time employees and several part-time interns to meet outcomes.
  • Lead the weekly check-ins with the SJSU liaison, setting weekly agendas and identifying ways to partner with SJSU departments (e.g., Career Center, College of Science, College of Social Science). 
  • Participate in the org-wide Program Management Team to drive program model strategy and decisions, recommending changes as needed on Braven’s program model to achieve transformational and sustainable impact. 


Manage Program Implementation at SJSU

  • Spearhead the recruitment, selection, and on-boarding of volunteers to ensure a high-quality, diverse, and impactful corps of professional volunteers. For FY22, this means 50 Leadership Coaches, 9 Coaching Partners, 400+ Mock Interviewers, and 150 Professional Mentors. 
  • Observe and provide weekly feedback to Braven Leadership Coaches to support them to improve their own facilitation and coaching skill sets.
  • Support the regional site team to successfully retain 150-250 students each semester into the Braven Accelerator course while also supporting region-wide scale efforts. 
  • Execute and attend the Braven Accelerator course, which takes place on weekday evenings (2 evenings/week for 15 weeks per semester) along with 1-2 occasional special events per semester typically held on Saturdays.
  • Collaborate productively and regularly with SJSU Faculty Advisors who support Braven course execution.


Engage Regional Partners

  • Help manage local employer partners to power the Braven Accelerator course and post-course experience by providing volunteers, sponsoring events, and hiring Braven alums.
  • Cultivate strong relationships within the local ecosystem of nonprofits and companies to grow Braven’s impact in the Bay Area .


Required Professional Experience and Skills:

  • 7-10 years of experience, with a track record of achieving successful outcomes
  • Prior experience managing teams and building strong team culture 
  • Proven ability to create, operationalize, and manage project plans and deadlines
  • Track record of using data and metrics to drive decisions and measure performance
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree

  • Work from the San Jose office 4 days a week and two evenings a week (Tues and Wed nights); schedule is adjusted accordingly due to COVID
  • Experience working with diverse populations
  • Direct experience in education (K12-Higher Ed) a plus
  • BA or equivalent degree required
  • Strongly preferred: Lives in/experience working in/strong connection to San Jose

Staff who are meeting expectations generally receive an annual 3% increase. Braven conducts benchmarking every other year; based on this external data, some salaries may also receive market adjustments to keep pace with relevant competition in similar roles. The salary for this position depends on your prior work experience and will start between $94,100-$117,000. Please be advised, you will have an opportunity to discuss salary in more detail after you begin the application process.


In typical times where social distancing is not in place, Braven teammates gather in the office four days a week. Each teammate can use one flex day of their choosing per week to work remotely.
