About the Role

In order to achieve its ambition of serving 40,000 Fellows over the next decade, Braven must continue to build out its growing Finance team so we can maintain fiscal responsibility, with exceptional internal controls and tight month-end close processes to support our growth. In that effort, Braven is hiring a Senior Accountant to join our Finance team. In this role you will own the month-end close and general ledger workstreams, and have an opportunity to create new or improved Finance policies and processes that will help us reach our ambitions and leave a legacy in the Braven Finance department for years to come. 


What You’ll Do: 

  • Manage accounting activities of the organization and ensures compliance with appropriate GAAP standards and regulatory requirements
  • Perform monthly closing journal entries and support or lead all other monthly, quarterly and year-end close processes
  • Support the annual audit, including preparation of year-end closing, prepare balance sheet accounts analysis; prepare and post year-end journal entries
  • Streamline inefficiencies within the organization; develop systems and processes that minimize the amount of effort required by staff to complete administrative tasks such as timesheets, expense reports and invoice processing, while maintaining airtight internal controls
  • Develop, maintain, and train non-finance staff on fiscal policies and procedures 
  • Review Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable, and Payroll transactions; ensure accurate synchronization of payroll and accounts payable in Intacct
  • Prepare financial reports for month-end, quarter-end, and year-end close, as well as for grant reporting and ad-hoc reporting, in coordination with the External Affairs team and other Finance teammates
  • Maintain Braven’s accounting-related systems, including Intacct, Expensify, and, plus collaborate on system improvements for Salesforce, Martus, and others as needed
  • Own the year-end 1099 filing, audit and 990 project management, and annual filings in coordination with our third party preparers, ensuring we have a clean audit and meet filing requirements
  • Support all other accounting related functions as needed, and additional duties as assigned

Qualifications & Skills: 

Braven is looking for an experienced Accountant, eager to showcase their problem-solving skills, and comfortable with ambiguity and constant evolution, to support our growing Finance team. You are bringing experiences and strengths like these:

  • You have 3-5 years of experience in Accounting
  • You have successfully managed the month-end accounting close processes for another organization and have experience implementing new processes and policies
  • A Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance or related field, with knowledge of generally accepted accounting practices and principles and auditing practices and principles. 
  • Experience in Sage Intacct, or other equivalent accounting software
  • Must be able to take initiative and prioritize, and work well under pressure
  • Superior organizational and project management skills with strong attention to detail
  • You are a problem-solver with an eye torwards customer service
  • Professional and highly ethical
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion

  • Ability to work in-person in Atlanta (GA), Chicago (IL) PREFERRED, Newark (NJ), or New York City (NYC)
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must be fully vaccinated and have received the Booster vaccination against COVID-19 and provide proof of such by the date of hire. Individuals may claim exemption from the vaccine requirement for medical or religious reasons. Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position, which depends on prior work experience and our assessment of your demonstrated fit for the role, will likely be between $62,500-$77,900 in Chicago; $59,300-$74,100 in Atlanta; $67,300-$84,300 in Newark and New York City. Braven offers competitive base salaries based on the midpoint of the market among not-for-profit organizations of similar size, with opportunities for salary growth over time. We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact on behalf of the organization, and take internal and external equity seriously. Given our commitment to equity, Braven does not negotiate salary offers; instead each salary offer is determined carefully using external and internal benchmarking. When social distancing is not in place, we gather in the office three days a week. Therefore, we require teammates to live within commuting distance of one of our hubs: Chicago, New York City, Newark, and Atlanta. Each teammate can use two flex days of their choosing per week to work remotely. We believe in the magic, connection, and collaboration that happens when people work together face-to-face and we believe in giving people flexibility to focus, balance personal priorities, and save themselves two commutes per week.
