About the Role

The Managing Director is the inspiring leader who sets a powerful vision for Braven’s programmatic success at the Rutgers University-Newark and is responsible for ensuring that students who participate as Braven Fellows secure a strong first job or enroll in graduate school within 6 months of graduation. You will lead a team of four full-time employees (i.e. Program Manager of Accelerator, Program Manager of Workforce, Program Manager of Recruitment, and Program Operations Coordinator) and a team of part-time interns. You’ll also be responsible for recruiting and selecting our volunteers, and will build and maintain a positive and strong presence at Rutgers University-Newark and in the greater Newark community.

Reporting directly to the Executive Director, Newark NJ, the Managing Director will be responsible for:

  • Setting a vision for the Rutgers University-Newark site and team and building a strategic plan to support that vision
  • Responsible to steward the org-wide policies and culture within your team and hub
  • Leading the implementation of Braven’s programming at Rutgers University-Newark, including the pre-course, course, and post-course experience, to meet programmatic goals
  • Successfully recruiting and coaching volunteers (known as Leadership Coaches) on their facilitation of weekly virtual Learning Labs to ensure strong weekly engagement. 


The strongest candidates for this role have prior management experience ideally in the education or nonprofit sector along with a clear understanding of the experiences of First-Generation, Pell-Eligible and/or undergraduates of color and the transition from college to career or graduate school. They demonstrate a clear ability to build strong relationships and shared value partnerships with a wide range of stakeholders and have mastered the ability to fully leverage data and metrics to drive decision-making. They are energized by public speaking and facilitation, thrive on human interaction and enjoy the challenge of meeting new people.


The individual in this role will ultimately: 


Set Vision and Direction (35%)

  • Set goals and key performance indicators for the Rutgers University-Newark site aligned with Braven’s local and national priorities while also building a collaborative team culture committed to excellence.
  • Manage and develop a high-performing team of four full-time employees and several part-time interns to meet outcomes.
  • Set relationship management strategy and priorities for Rutgers University-Newark in collaboration with the Executive Director and central University Partnerships team
  • Participate in the org-wide Program Management Team to drive program model strategy and decisions, recommending changes as needed on Braven’s program model to achieve transformational and sustainable impact. 
  • Heavily support Executive Director in leading team operations and culture 


Manage Program Implementation at Rutgers University-Newark  (50%)

  • Spearhead the recruitment, selection, and on-boarding of volunteers to ensure a high-quality, diverse, and impactful corps of volunteers. For FY23, this means ~35 Leadership Coaches and ~188 Mock Interviewers
  • Observe and provide weekly feedback to Braven Leadership Coaches to support them to improve their own facilitation and coaching skill sets
  • Lead the site team to successfully recruit students each semester into the Braven Accelerator course while also supporting region-wide scale efforts 
  • Attend and oversee quality execution of the Braven Accelerator course which takes place on weekdays from 6-8 pm (2 days/week for 15 weeks per semester) along with 1-2 special events per semester typically held on Saturday’s
  • Lead the weekly check-ins with the Rutgers University-Newark liaison; setting weekly agendas and identifying ways to partner with Rutgers University-Newark’s departments (i.e. Career Center, etc.) 
  • Collaborate productively and regularly with RutgersUniversity-Newark ’s Faculty of Record that supports with Braven course execution


Engage Regional Partners (15%)

  • Help manage a diverse set of local employer/career partners to power the Braven Accelerator course experience by providing volunteers, sponsoring events, and hiring Braven alums
  • Cultivate strong relationships within the local ecosystem of nonprofits and companies to grow Braven’s impact in Newark, New Jersey


Required Professional Experience and Skills:

  • 7-10 years of experience, with a track record of achieving successful outcomes
  • Prior experience with managing teams and building strong team culture 
  • Proven ability to create, operationalize, and manage project plans and deadlines
  • Track record of using data and metrics to drive decisions and measure performance
  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills
  • Deep roots in and knowledge of Newark, NJ
  • Bachelor’s or equivalent degree

  • Ability to work in-person in Newark, New Jersey 
  • Authorized to work in the US

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position, which depends on prior work experience and our assessment of your fit for the role, will likely be between $108,400 -$135,500. Braven offers competitive base salaries based on the midpoint of the market among not-for-profit organizations of similar size, with opportunities for salary growth over time. We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact on behalf of the organization, and take internal equity seriously. Given our commitment to equity and the inequities that can emerge from salary negotiations, Braven does not negotiate salary offers; instead each salary offer is determined carefully upfront using benchmarking. You will have an opportunity to discuss salary in more detail after you begin the application process.

Location

When social distancing is not in place, we gather in the office three days a week. Each teammate can use two flex days per week to work remotely. We believe in the magic, connection, and collaboration that happens when people work together face-to-face and we believe in giving people flexibility to focus, balance personal priorities, and save themselves one commute per week.
