About the Role

In order to achieve its ambition of serving 40,000 Fellows over the next decade, Braven must manage day-to-day work against a nimble but disciplined strategy that is informed by various kinds of data analysis and managed through well-managed cross-team collaboration efforts.

In that effort, Braven is hiring a Director of Strategic Operations who will drive two key objectives:

  1. Steward the organizational planning processes to ensure that the day-to-day work of each team within the organization is aligned to our current strategy and coordinated in lockstep with each other such that the right work gets done at the right time with the right input
  2. Steward cross-functional decision making that helps the organization move towards ‘operational excellence’ as we scale (an effort to create as efficient and broad-access of an outcomes and business model as possible).

As a member of the Strategy team, situated within the CEO’s office and reporting to the VP of Strategy, you will help to prioritize and steward planning and decision making bodies related to our growth strategy as well as project manage our annual and quarterly planning processes.


What You’ll Do: 

  • Project and process manage our multi-year, annual, and quarterly planning and progress to goals processes (70%)
    • Communicate and invest other leaders in our planning and goal setting processes with clear deadlines, useful planning tools, and on-demand support to senior leaders
    • Collaborate with the Finance team and External Affairs team to ensure the planning process is synced with our internal budgeting process and our check-points with our board of directors.
    • Support leaders in their planning and progress to goals practices
    • Overtime, make recommendations for how we build out our methods for assessing and making sense of our progress to goals across annual metrics and KPIs
  • Facilitate working groups that drive our strategic plan to execution, codifying decisions and next steps, reporting out progress to the organizations leadership and make recommendations for how to unlock. Provide planning, follow-up and decision support for leaders engaging in these  (15%)
    • Steward the creation and iteration of partnership agreements between teams
    • Create venues for critical leaders to give input on changes to our operating model, program model, and growth strategy
    • Facilitate and report progress against working group objectives as needed 
  • Build relationships with organization stewards to understand their priorities and context while investing them in our vision for cross-functional collaboration  (15%) 

Qualifications & Skills: Braven is looking for a seasoned project manager, detailed planner, adept relationship builder and people influencer, and clear communicator. You are bringing experiences and strengths like these:

  • You have 5+ years of experience with project creation and project management of complex workstreams with many stakeholders
  • You have experience managing complex decision making processes, including stakeholders with diverse needs and interests
  • You have excellent communication skills (PowerPoint, Google Slides, etc) and facility with data visualization and interpretation (for goal tracking practices).
  • Ability to form relationships with stakeholders across lines of difference and role titles 
  • You have a demonstrated commitment to equity and inclusion
  • You exemplify Braven’s core values
  • Your experiences have informed your belief in Braven’s mission and have prepared you to work with, or for, Braven’s student Fellow population
  • You are an excellent written communicator, particularly in slide form (MS Power Point, Google Slides, etc)
  • Comfort leading large group meetings and presenting to senior leaders

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to work in-person in one of our regional hub offices 2-3 days per week.
  • Ability to travel 4-6 times per year for strategy meetings, team stepbacks, data presentations.
  • Authorized to work in the U.S.
  • Must be fully vaccinated and have received the Booster vaccination against COVID-19 and provide proof of such by the date of hire. Individuals may claim exemption from the vaccine requirement for medical or religious reasons. Exempted individuals will be subject to weekly testing if they engage in any in-person work activities. .   

Compensation and Benefits

The salary for this position, which depends on prior work experience and our assessment of your demonstrated fit for the role, will likely be between $79,900 - $98,600 for Atlanta, $83,000 - $103,700 for Chicago, and $89,600 - $112,000 for Newark or New York. Braven offers competitive base salaries based on the midpoint of the market among not-for-profit organizations of similar size, with opportunities for salary growth over time. We believe in compensating staff members fairly in relation to each other, their qualifications, and their impact on behalf of the organization, and take internal and external equity seriously. Given our commitment to equity, Braven does not negotiate salary offers; instead each salary offer is determined carefully using external and internal benchmarking. When social distancing is not in place, we gather in the office two - three days a week. Therefore, we require teammates to live within commuting distance of one of our  hubs: Chicago, New York City, Newark, and Atlanta. Each teammate can use two flex days per week of their choosing to work remotely. We believe in the magic, connection, and collaboration that happens when people work together face-to-face and we believe in giving people flexibility to focus, balance personal priorities, and save themselves two commutes per week.
